Fushimi Inari-taisha is just outside Kyoto. The sprawling complex covers a forested mountainside, the paths marked by red torii gate that represent a transition to the divine. By the time you get to the top, you must be ready to go to heaven!
Shortly after I took this photo, I left the main path and walked through the bamboo forest. I eventually came to what I took to be an ancestral shrine. It had a wall, and many individual fox statues with offerings of flowers, rice and candles. It was starting to get dark and rainy, so I didn’t hang around long. Unfortunately, that path left the mountain, and I never made it to the top. One day, I’ll have to return and finish the climb.
